Kodomo no Omocha (Child's Toy) 8 Obana Miho Ribon Mascot Comics/Shuueisha Translation by Emily Horner/Fall 2000 Kurata Sana: An energetic 7th-grader who belong to a theatrical group. Hayama Akito: He was a lone wolf, but he opened up his heart to Sana. Kurata Misako: Sana's mom, a novelist. Sasaki Tsuyoshi: Hayama's friend. Scary when he gets mad. Komori: Hayama's classmate. Matsui Fuuka: Sana's good friend, who used to live in Osaka. Kamura Naozumi: A very popular bishounen [pretty boy] actor. Sagami Rei: Sana's manager. The story up to #7: Sana is an energetic 7th-grader who's very active in acting. When she was in 6th grade, her mother Misako published an essay revealing the secrets of her birth. In the midst of all the commotion surrounding its publication, her classmate Hayama came to her support. When they enter middle school, Sana makes friends with Fuuka, a girl in her class. But, while Sana's absent from school to shoot a movie on location, Fuuka becomes Hayama's girlfriend. Sana was very shocked when she learned about this. But, when she finally returned to school, both Hayama and Sana learned that they liked each other. However, Sana thinks about Fuuka and decides to disappear from in front of them. Meanwhile, there was a big fuss about Hayama getting suspended from school. Sana comes to school out of concern for Hayama. Komori has vanished, leaving behind a letter that says 'I was hurt by Hayama, so I'm going to kill myself.' This was because when he asked Hayama if he could write down his name as his best friend, Hayama told him to write down the name of a real friend. Hayama went out to look for Komori. Right before he left, he told Sana, "I really do love you after all." Sana prays for his safety… Sana : Hayama went to find Komori-kun a little while ago…I'm the only one who knows where they are now. I wonder what I should do…I told mom and Rei-kun the basic situation, without telling them I knew where they were. Rei : That's awful. Misako : And you really don't know anything else? Hayama : I'd like to go by myself, keeping it secret from any adults. Misako : This is very important, Sana. Think hard. <> Sana : "Kid's Eyes", a special program by kids for kids, with me, Kurata Sana, as your host! --And her assistant Rina! Sana : With Kamura Naozumi-kun and others as guests! --A two-hour live broadcast tomorrow night at 7:00! Rei : Sana-chan… <> Rei : I know it might be hard, but I want you to think about the special tomorrow. Sana : All right. Rei : Anyway, sleep well. Sana : Good night. But I can't sleep… This thing with Komori-kun seems like a trick, and even though he said he would kill himself I don't think he will, but I still have a bad feeling about this. I don't know what I should do at all. I wonder if Hayama's reached the forest yet. Hayama : I'm here…but it's wide, and it's cold. He said the forest by Lake F…but you can't find anybody in the middle of this… <> Hayama : I should keep going. He's probably too chicken to go very deep into it. Sana : The next day…the fuss about this just kept getting bigger. Mr.Hayama : Yesterday evening I got a call from my son at the office, and he told me about this. When I came home, he wasn't there anymore, and I don't know anything else. --And you call yourself a father!? Mr.Hayama : Well, I really don't know how to answer that… <> Aya : Fuuka-chan, have you heard anything from Hayama-kun? Fuuka : There's no reason he'd call me. Aya : What about Sana-chan? Fuuka : She's not here yet. Hayama : It's almost noon, but it's still pitch black… <> Hayama : When you walk around by yourself like this, you start thinking weird things…remembering things from long ago that are usually locked up inside… A new can? <> Hayama : And a bean paste bag, definitely new… Hayama : Komori! Are you there, Komori? Komori, right? Komori : You came… Komori : I can't believe you really came… Hayama : What the hell are you smiling at!? What's wrong with you, making so much trouble? Komori : You're mad, after all… <> Hayama : Why did you do this? Was it about the print? Komori : What else would it be? Hayama : A little thing like that's a reason for suicide!? (Sorry about that, though) Komori : It's not a little thing! I knew somebody like you wouldn't understand how I felt. Hayama : Somebody like me? <> Komori : A strong person like you couldn't understand the feelings of someone weak like me. Hayama : You're right, I don't understand. …Though I'm really not that strong… I came here so that I could try to understand. Tell me what you want. Komori : It was hard, but I got it ready…we're going to die together, there. We'll die together because we were good friends…and then I'll forgive you, Hayama-kun. <> Komori : And I'll be at ease… Hayama : This guy's really dangerous. Stop joking. Komori : I'm not joking, I'm serious. Hayama : I am not going to kill myself. I definitely won't! And if you want to know why…it's because my mother gave her life giving birth to me. So if you want me to die, you have to do it yourself. And then you can do what you like. <> Komori : You can say that, but if I try to do it you'll run away. Hayama : I won't run away. Do what you like. What's wrong? <> Hayama : Do it. You hate me, don't you? Komori : Yeah. I hate you! You betrayed me! I thought we were friends! <> --What in the world are the police doing? Can't they even find one person? Are they even seriously looking? Sana : Um… --Kurata-san! Sana : Hayama-kun is definitely going to bring Komori-kun back, so let's wait a while. I'm sorry, Hayama. I'm going to tell them. --What do you mean, Kurata-san? Sana : I'm worried. They're in the forest on the shores of Lake F. <> Hayama : You missed. I won't die like this. Komori : Aaaah! <> Hayama : Why are you freaking out like that? If you stab someone, they bleed. It's only natural. Do it right. Here. What's wrong? You want me to die, don't you? <> Hayama : Do it. Komori : Aaaagh! <> Hayama : You shouldn't be talking about dying if something like this freaks you out. Well, if you're not going to do it, I don't need to stay here. I'm going home. Komori : You're…going home? <> Hayama : Of course I am, come on! I don't have much patience, so if you're not going with me I'll go without you! Dammit… <> Komori : Ha…Hayama-kun? Hayama : What? Komori : Does it hurt? Hayama : Of course it hurts, stupid! Komori : What'll happen when we get back? Hayama : I haven't thought about that, but anyway, I'm going. Komori : How do you know where to go? Hayama : I left symbols. Hayama : This is the first time I've ever done something like this for someone. Hey, don't you have any other friends? Komori : No, I don't…because my mom picks my friends. Hayama : What? Komori : In elementary school, there was a kid I was friends with, but in sixth grade, my mom said to him, 'Kazuyuki-san is taking the entrance exam for A middle school, so don't invite him to play so much any more.' And then that kid started to tease me, even though we used to be such good friends. And on top of that, I failed the entrance exam. Hayama : Your mom sounds mean. Can't you tell her how you felt about that? Komori : I can't… <> Komori : She'd get mad at me…she's been angry ever since my dad got transferred…I don't want to see her get mad. She turns blue with rage and looks like a monster. And then she starts crying, and says "Why can't you do what I tell you?" So I have to do what she tells me. Hayama : That's wrong. You should talk to her, even if it makes her mad, because you're not her doll. Just honestly say your opinions. Komori : I don't know if I can… Hayama : You can. What do you want me to do? Tell me. Komori : I want to be friends with you. Hayama : Friends, huh? You know, for some reason, even though the girls hate me like I was a bug, I've always been well-liked by the boys in the class. Komori : But you're really popular with girls, Hayama-kun! Even some of the girls in the other classes! <> Hayama : If I say I'm not popular, agree with me! Komori : Sorry! Is he…embarrassed? Hayama : Come on! He's smiling…I wonder if I've helped heal the wound in Komori's heart… <> Hayama : …Like the time she helped heal mine… Komori : Hayama-kun! Your blood…isn't stopping! I'm sorry! Hayama : Do you have anything to bind it up? Komori : Two towels, and a scarf. Hayama : Let me have them. Komori : What should I do? What should I do? I'm sorry, sometimes my head gets scrambled, and… Hayama : It's all right, I can't feel the pain any more. <> Komori : All right? But can't people die from losing too much blood? Hayama : Don't say something like that, it's bad luck. Anway, let's go. Can I use your bag? Komori : Huh? Hayama : To stick my arm in. It'll get dirty, though. Komori : That's fine. Hayama : It looks like we've reached the road into town. Komori : What now? Hayama : There's a station over that way, and then I guess it's two hours by train… Komori : Shouldn't you look for a hospital first? Hayama : It's all right, I'm holding up fine. The important thing is to get you home. I have to get home soon. They're all waiting…and she's waiting… <> --Several policeman have been sent out to the region of Lake F, and others are waiting at this station to avoid missing them if they pass through. Please contact us immediately if they're found. Sana : Hayama's late…maybe he couldn't find him… Mr.Hayama : I'm going too! Natsumi : What if you accidentally cross paths? Rei : 5:40…the program's at 7:00, we're supposed to be in the studio by 6:00…Sana-chan? Sana : I know. I'll go, so can I just wait a little longer? Rei : I'll have to take her soon. She has a live commercial to do…and she definitely can't be late for the main program… <> --Hey! That's them, both of them! Sana : Thank goodness! --Komori-san? Mrs.Komori: You knew where Kazuyuki-san was after all! Komori : Mom, stop! --Komori-san! <> --I'm just glad they're both safe! Mr.Hayama : Akito! Tsuyoshi : Akito-kun! Sana : Wow! I'm glad you brought him back! Tsuyoshi : Akito-kun, you look pale! Fuuka : No kidding! What happened? Hayama : Fuuka…I'm sorry. <> Hayama : Sorry… --Blood! --Call an ambulance! --Akito! Sana : What's going on? Hayama? --Male, 13 years old, unconscious. There's a deep wound on his upper right arm, thought to be a stab wound. <> --Severe blood loss from an artery in the upper arm. --Make preparations for a transfusion. Sana : Rei-kun… Rei : Sana-chan… Sana : Why did Hayama feel so cold? Why? You came back…I waited for you, Hayama. So why… Hayama! --He's stopped breathing! <> Sana : Hayama… --Starting artificial respiration. --Injecting Ringer's Solution! --Prepare for a blood transfusion! Sana : Hayama! --His heart's stopped! --Starting CPR! <> --Your son's in critical condition right now. His heart stopped because of the shock from loss of blood. Mr.Hayama : Can you save him? --We're continuing to try to save him with heart massage and artificial respiration. There's still a chance we can revive him, but I can't say the odds are very good. We're going to start a blood transfusion, but blood would be late arriving from the blood bank, so your blood type is… Mr.Hayama : B, the same as his. --It seems as if he tried all sorts of ways to stop the blood, but because the blood loss was from an artery, it didn't work. It's thought that four to five hours have passed since he sustained the wound. Frankly, it's very surprising that he was able to walk for that long. <> Mr.Hayama : Please don't give up. --Of course! Sana : Hayama…no! --We can't get hold of Kurata! --She's supposed to be here at 6, right? She might be on her way. --I called Sagami-san's cell phone a little while ago, and it looks like there's been some kind of emergency. He said she might not be able to make it. --What!? --It's a live broadcast! The show must go on, come hell or high water! Get her, and fast! --Sagami-san, where are you? --Rina-chan, if Sana-chan can't come, you'll have to be the host. --Rina can't do it, this is her first time on a variety show. --Our guest Kamura-kun is here! Naozumi : Wow, things are really lively here! --No, it's awful! Naozumi : What? Sana-chan's not here yet? --I can't do it! I can't do it unless Sana-san comes! --So Rina-chan can't do it… --Sana-chan was mostly talking by herself at the rehearsal… <> --Sagami-san, just tell me where you are, please! Rei : So that you can come and get her, right? --Of course! Rei : I can't. A very dear friend of Sana-chan is in critical condition. --Critical condition? So what? A star can't let even her parent's death get to her! Bring her over here, quick! You're her manager, after all! <> --If there's a hole in this program because of her, her life as a star will be over! Rei : The important thing is her life as a person. I'm sorry, but I'm hanging up now. --Sagami! Naozumi : Sagami-san! Who's in critical condition? Rei : Naozumi-kun? Naozumi : …Then I guess she won't be coming. All right, I'll figure something out. Rei : Huh? Naozumi : If Sana-chan doesn't show up, I'll be the host. --Nao! <> Naozumi : I know the basic contents of the show from seeing the script. --If you'd do it, Kamura-kun, that would be a big help. --But, Nao, you were only going to be on for fifteen minutes! And you've got a drama to film! Naozumi : That isn't live. Please, have them wait. --Naozumi! Naozumi : Please…have them wait… I can do this much…Sana-chan, Hayama, hang in there. <> --Excuse me, may I talk with you for a moment? It seems to be a stab wound, but… You came back with him from F-field, didn't you? Then, were you the one who inflicted that wound? --Stop, my son would never— --But a knife was found in your son's bag. Was that knife yours? Komori : Yeah. --Stop this, my son is the victim! <> --That Hayama bullied him! My son could never do such a thing. --I'm asking your son, ma'am. --Stop making false accusations! My son bears no responsibility for this! <> --He's a victim! Sana : Stop trying to put the blame on someone! --Sana-chan! <> Sana : What have you been talking about? I think you've got your priorities wrong. Hayama's fighting for his life, and you're talking about who's to blame. <> Sana : You can talk about that later! After Hayama's safe! Fuuka : Sana… You do have your priorities wrong. I hate adults with frozen hearts. Can't you be a little more tactful, even if you are the police? <> Tsuyoshi : They're right, you can talk about this later! Aya : I can't believe you can talk about it at a time like this! --You children… --They have a point. We'll talk about it later. <> --How's his pulse? --No improvement. --Is it no use? --It's too early to give up. Keep trying. --I'll take my turn. <> Hayama : I feel heavy… <> Hayama : A door… --Watch out! That's dangerous. It's a good thing I was there. Hayama : I was going there. What's with this lady? --Don't you think it's still too early for a kid like you to go over there? <> --Do you want to come here? Hayama : I don't want to, but I will. --Why? Hayama : She looks like she used to be a 'yan'… [From Frederick Schodt's "Dreamland Japan": "Yankii females are often affiliated with Japan's gangs of life-fast-die-young car- and motorcycle-crazed delinquent youths. Yankii women affect an 'attitude'; they may dye their hair reddish, smoke in public…"] Because I'm a criminal. --Oh? Hayama : I made two girls cry. --You're quite conceited. Hayama : And I couldn't save Komori, I just ended up causing a lot of trouble. --But it's sneaky to come over here because of that. Hayama : Sneaky? Am I getting smaller? <> --It takes courage to look at one's own faults. But if you think you've done something wrong, then you should live with that guilt and pain. To live with that self-loathing, writhing with agony inside your heart, is a worse punishment than coming over here. Hayama : But my body feels so heavy… --It's all right. They put your father's and Natsumi-chan's blood in. <> Hayama : Dad…Natsumi… Are you…maybe…? --I'm sorry that I wasn't able to raise you. <> --Akito, I gave birth to you because I love you. So, do your best to go on living…for me… Hayama : Someone told me that before…but who? Have I forgotten? <> Hayama : No, I haven't forgotten. Sana… Sana : Hayama! <> --He's got a pulse! --It's weak, but… --His pulse has returned! --Great! --He's breathing again! <> --We still can't let our guard down, but…both his respiration and his pulse have returned. We're finished the surgery on his arm as well. <> Sana : Say it again so that we can understand. Fuuka : Yeah. --He's safe. <> --His pulse is stable, he's all right now. Sana : He's really, really going to be all right? --Yes, I opened the curtain so you can see him. Sana : He moved…good… <> Sana : Let's go, Rei-kun. Rei : Are you OK? Sana : Yeah. --It seems that Hayama-kun's condition is stable. Will you come with me, Komori-kun? --Please wait, my son's tired, and… <> --We can't be too soft on him. He's a suspect in an attempted murder. --Murder? --Please come later. Now, I'm taking your son to hear his version of the circumstances. Can you come, Komori-kun? Komori : Yeah. --Wait, my son's only 13, he couldn't possibly commit murder! Komori : "You should tell your mother what you really think." Mom, I've already committed murder many times. <> --What!? Komori : I've killed my own self, many times, in front of you. Why did you give birth to me? Was it only for you? <> --Let's go. Misako : Komori-san. I'm sorry about my daughter's rudeness earlier. However, I think she may be right about your priorities being mistaken. The first thing you did when those two arrived at the station was to grab Hayama-kun. I wouldn't go so far as to say that you absolutely must run up to your own child and give him a hug, but you could have at least said "welcome back." I'm sorry, I never meant to be so meddlesome, but after seeing this I had to do something. It's Komori-kun's notebook. For some reason it was in my daughter's room. Perhaps Komori-kun gave it to Hayama-kun and he gave it to her. <> Misako : In it, if you read between the lines, you can see his adoration of Hayama-kun and the fear and hatred of his mother. I think you're wrong about how to show your love. --Wrong? Misako : A child's life is his own. It doesn't belong to you. I don't think you understand that. The first one who ought to recognize when their child sends out an SOS is their parent, and yet you yourself were causing his pain. You shouldn't only blame Hayama-kun. Well, I'll go home now that I've said what I wanted to say. I'll give this to the police; they should find it useful for establishing Komori-kun's mental state. Still, all this must be hard on her too…not to have your husband there, at a time like this… <> Naozumi : So, you've been thinking about a lot of things? --Of course! Don't make me sound like an idiot! Naozumi : Sorry, I guess I have been. --Well, I'll have to forgive you just because you're cute. Naozumi : Before we go to a commercial, here's Rina-chan with information about a present! Sana-chan! What happened? Is Hayama-kun…? Sana : He's fine. Naozumi : Really? Good. Naozumi : I'm up to this point. Can you do it? Sana : Yeah. Thanks, Naozumi-kun. We can be friends again. <> --Thanks, Kamura-kun. That was a big help. Naozumi : Did I do all right? --It was great. --Hurry, Nao, they're waiting for you. Naozumi : Don't worry about paying me overtime, I'll get the money from Sana-chan. Appearing like the wind, leaving like a bird, the refreshing ally of justice, Naozumi-man! --Your son's regained consciousness. Mr.Hayama : Can I see him? --Just for a little while. Mr.Hayama : Akito! Tsuyoshi : Akito-kun! <> Hayama : I'm hungry. Natsumi : You worry us like that and then that's the first thing you say!? Tsuyoshi : Don't kill him! Fuuka : Don't joke about that! Hayama : Where's Komori? --With the police. --Akito! You can't get up yet! Hayama : Dad… <> Hayama : It wasn't his fault, I provoked him. Tell the police that I have to talk to them. Mr.Hayama : All right. Fuuka : Akito…oh, thank goodness…I couldn't stand it if you died before you paid me back. We need to talk, don't we? Even though I understand that if we talk, it'll probably be about us breaking up… --That's enough for today! Fuuka : Then, I'll see you tomorrow. Hayama : Right. As long as we're alive, tomorrow will come. We may writhe in agony from pain, or laugh out loud when we find happiness. We become stronger, and keep living. --So, I've been thinking about a lot of different things, like—why was I born in the first place? Sana : That's easy. We were born to live. Sana : I thought I pretty much understood how serious it was to leave a big hole like that in a live broadcast…but… --What was the reason you were late? Sana : There were some unavoidable circumstances… --But a TV program isn't like school. Sana : I know. I won't offer you any excuses; I was late. I'm very sorry for the inconvenience I've caused to the station and the audience. --Wait, Sana-chan! Rei : You could have explained the reason a little better… Sana : No, I couldn't have. Hayama's name, and this whole incident, might get out. --Because of the host being different than expected, the station was flooded with phone calls and its phone lines went down. If the program had been a success, then the station was apparently thinking about making it a regular feature, but that doesn't seem likely. However, the audience was huge because of Kamura-kun as a replacement. <> Sana : The producer who was really mad at me for being late calmed down quite a lot when he realized how great the ratings were. --When I think over it, perhaps I did over-react…but I definitely won't be making this a regular show, or if I do, there will be a different host. Sana : Right. Because of losing this chance at a regular show, I've decided to be more careful with FJN jobs in the future. I really am sorry for causing so much trouble. --Well…was that friend of yours all right? Sana : Yeah! Rei : Right, he was hospitalized last night…how is he? Rei : They said that Hayama-kun was recovering nicely. They've been doing tests of his brain waves, and he's talking to inspectors. Sana : Oh. Rei : Do you want to go see him? Sana : No, that's all right. Rei : Why not? Sana : Well, he must be swamped with tests and things, and as long as he's doing well, that's all right. Rei : You don't want to go see him? Sana : It's all right…as long as he's living here, under the sky… Rei : I guess she feels like she's transcended the big mountain of life and death…she'll be coming back to normal very soon… Sana : Rei-kun! <> Sana : Thanks for not making me go when I couldn't. Rei : It was nothing. But I guess I'm a failure as your manager. Sana : Then I'm a failure as a star! We're both total failures! Rei : Failures! Sana : It seems pointless when you say it so much. Rei : Yeah. Maybe we should quit. Sana : Yeah. Rei : On to the magazine interview! They'll probably ask more about what happened yesterday, though. Sana : That's all right! <> Natsumi : Did you tell them what you wanted to? Hayama : Yeah. Oh, thanks for the blood. Natsumi : That's a strange thing to thank someone for… Dad's talking with the doctors now. They said it was a miracle that you lived through this. <> Hayama : Natsumi… Natsumi : Call me "dear sister"! Hayama : Dear sister… Natsumi : That feels weird! Hayama : Did our mom use to be a 'yan'? Natsumi : Excuse me, my brother's acting weird, could you check his brain waves again? <> Hayama : No one would believe me if I told them…I feel like it was all a dream… Is it 4:00? I'm hungry… Fuuka : Can I talk to him for a while, nurse? --Yes, but keep it quick. Fuuka : OK! <> Fuuka : You're up…you're looking better. Aya-chan and the others wanted to come too, but things are still pretty complicated, so I came as the representative. Hayama : Oh. Fuuka : Sana didn't come to school today. She's got problems of her own. Hayama : Like what? Fuuka : She was here yesterday, she stayed right here even though she had a live broadcast to do. Hayama : But she'll get in trouble for that, won't she? Fuuka : That's what I just said. But she couldn't really help it, because you were in more trouble. She did a press conference today and I watched some of it on TV during lunch, but she didn't say anything like 'an acquaintance of mine was in serious condition.' It must be awful being a star, because you've got to do your job no matter what happens. I brought you some fruit, which is from everyone. I thought I should get sushi instead but everyone said that you can't give sushi to someone whose heart stopped the day before. But since you said you were hungry yesterday, I thought I could at least bring you some fruit. Hayama : Thanks. Fuuka : I'm really nervous, for some reason… Hayama : Nervous? <> Fuuka : We haven't ever really talked. Hayama : We haven't? Fuuka : We've just talked about superficial things…and it feels strange… <> Fuuka : But we won't really have broken up unless I say, "We should break up". Like when I said, "Let's go out," and we did…I don't really understand… Hayama : I really don't hate you… <> Fuuka : But it has to be her? Remember when I said to you, once, 'there's no statute of limitations on a wounded heart'? Hayama : I remember. Fuuka : Well, now I think that maybe there is. <> Fuuka : So, I'll be all right. And you try hard too. Well, "Let's break up." "Goodbye." Hayama : Fuuka… Fuuka : Don't worry about saying you're sorry. <> Fuuka : Hey, cheer up. Hayama : I've committed one more crime… I should feel pain, because the person I've hurt is surely in more pain. <> Fuuka : I feel relieved, in a way… Hmm, midterms exams are coming up, I have to study…and there'll be club activities during winter break that I'll have to work hard on…I'll just cry a little bit, and then work hard again… Mr.Hayama : Komori-kun is being taken care of at a child guidance clinic. After that, he might be sent to family court, but it seems that he's calmed down quite a bit. <> Hayama : So they didn't care that I told them to forgive him? Mr.Hayama : No matter what you say, it's clear that he was the one in the wrong. He won't be punished because he's under 14, but they are investigating him nonetheless. <> Mr.Hayama : An attack? What do you mean? --He had breathing difficulties, and vomited. The cause is uncertain, but is probably psychological. The events lately must have been a great shock to him, and his arm… Mr.Hayama : Akito, don't blame yourself for what happened to Komori-kun. You stopped him from killing himself, and you brought him home. You did all you could. I would be more worried about the wound on your arm… Hayama : I don't care about that…there's something more important… <> Komori : There was this sound, like "Go," inside my head…and my head gets fuzzy sometimes… --When do you first remember that sound? Komori : About the time I started sixth grade. --Did something happen then? Komori : My dad got transferred, and my mom started getting mad all the time. --So his mother's the problem after all… Do you still hear that sound? Komori : Not any more. --It stopped? Since when? Komori : Since I talked a lot with Hayama-kun. <> --Hayama-kun in room 205 gets attacks every day, doesn't he? --Yes, but other than that, he's very energetic, walking around and asking for sushi, no matter what you tell him. Not again! And he bought something from the vending machine, too. Wait! Tsuyoshi : Akito-kun! Hayama : Hi! Tsuyoshi : You look really energetic! <> --Sana-chan, you have a guest! Sana : Who is it? Hi… Fuuka : There you are! <> Fuuka : I thought you were really busy with work, why haven't you been coming? Sana : Well, it's so close to exams, so I've been having a tutor come…even if I go to school, it just sounds like Greek to me… Fuuka : Not to school, to the hospital! Sana : Well, he's all right, so… Fuuka : But he's not all right! Sana : What do you mean? Fuuka : Aya-chan and the others went to see him, and his sister said, his hand…his right hand is paralyzed, it won't move. <> Sana : Hayama's hand… Fuuka : They said that a nerve right here was severed, and they tried to reattach it with surgery, but it's still paralyzed. He knows, but he just acts as if nothing's wrong…but that can't be it…and then he gets these weird attacks, too… Sana : I thought things were fine just as long as he was alive, but… Fuuka : Go on. <> Sana : Want to go together? Fuuka : If we both went, his heart would probably stop again. We…broke up. I understood that the person he needs…is you. Well, go on. Sana : Fuuka…Hayama… Fuuka : Don't just stand there worrying about it, I'm telling you to go! <> --Room 205 again! --He's calmed down. Natsumi : Why does that keep happening every day? --It might be from mental fatigue… <> --Oh, does he have an acquaintance called Hana-san or Kana-san or something like that? Natsumi : Hana? Well, the neighbors across the street have a dog named Hana, but… Sana : Um… Natsumi : Ah! Sana-chan! --Oh! 'Sana'-chan! Sana : It's Sana! <> Sana : Hayama? Can I come in? <> Sana : Um, Fuuka said that I should come, so… <> Sana : Hayama… <> Sana : No matter what kind of painful things might happen in the future, don't run from them. Take them as they come, because I'll be there with you. Hayama : Thank you. <> Sana : I never even thought that Hayama would say something gentle and honest like "thank you"… <> Sana : Your hand really won't move? Hayama : No…my arm can kind of move, but not from my wrist forward. Sana : But if you got stabbed in the arm, why is it your hand that won't move? Hayama : I don't really know. Sana : Things will probably be pretty hard from now on, and just when he said he was starting to enjoy karate, he won't be able to do it any more. Hayama : But it's nothing, really. <> Sana : Then what's wrong? That doctor said that you've been having these attacks… Hayama : Maybe it's because of having to stay here all day, but I've been remembering a lot about stuff that happened a long time ago, and thinking about Komori-kun. Sana : About Komori-kun? Why? He's the one who stabbed you. Hayama : Because we're friends. Sana : Huh? You are? Well, I asked my mom, and she said that she clearly said what she wanted to say to Komori-kun's mother. She said that they have their problems, but things just might work out all right. Sana : Hey, isn't it all because of you if Komori-kun and you become friends, and if he starts getting along better with his mother? Congratulations! Hayama : As usual, you always like to congratulate people. Sana : But you really did great! I'm sure things will turn out well! <> --Your time to talk with him is up. Sana : Well, I've gotta go. Take care! Hayama : Yeah… Sana : From the next day onward, Hayama didn't have any more attacks, and they changed his hospital room to one with another person in it. Hi, Natsumi-san! Natsumi : Thanks for coming to see Hayama yesterday! Sana : I wonder what's happening with Komori-kun… <> Natsumi : They still haven't decided on a punishment, but he's getting counseling now, and I heard that his mother is as well. Sana : Oh… Natsumi : Well, come again! Sana : Tell him I'll come as soon as exams are over! <2 days until exams! Aim for a passing grade!> --Are you done with the phone? Sana : Yeah. --Then let's continue! Mrs.Komori: Surely I have been a bit too harsh on him…but… --Now, I was surprised to learn that your husband is currently in traffic prison. <> Mrs.Komori: That's right, he caused an accident because of his carelessness…but please don't tell my son. I told him he merely was transferred to another job. --You've been hiding this from Kazuyuki-kun? Mrs.Komori: Yes, I tried desperately to hide it from him, always being careful—making sure he didn't answer the phone first, and… --That must have made you extremely tense. Mrs.Komori: It would hurt him if he knew! Please don't tell my son! --Kazuyuki-kun already knows. <> --He told me in counseling yesterday. --So, where's your father? Komori : He got transferred. --Where? Komori : Hokkaido. Well, that's what they say. The truth is different, but my mom's hiding it from me…so that's what I tell other people… Mrs.Komori: He knew? --Yes. Children are not as childish as adults think they are. <> --And, perhaps, adults are not as adult as they think they are, either. Please talk to him as another human being, even if it's just a little. His heart is a little weak, so support him. Then, I'm sure, he'll be all right. Misako : I see… Rei : Why are you paying so much attention to Komori-san? Misako : I got carried away before and said lots of things that I was a bit worried about. Maybe I should become a guru and instruct people in how to lead a life free of care… Rei : I think you should leave that to counselors. <> Sana : Now, what was this again? Hmm… --I hear someone going "hmm"! --Who is it? Sana : Oops, did I say that out loud? --Fuuka-chan, what did you get for #3? Fuuka : "B." Sana : "We broke up." Then…Fuuka… <> Sana : Must have been thinking about a lot of things before she came to tell me…but of course I wasn't thinking at all, as usual, so I can't say anything… Fuuka : Sana, how did it go? <> Sana : What? Fuuka : The test. Sana : Well, I think I'll get a passing grade…I hope… Fuuka : Want to walk home together? Sana : OK. Fuuka : Have you been to see him again? Sana : No, I just went that once. Fuuka : You should go again. Sana : Yeah, after exams are over. Fuuka : You don't seem too cheerful. Sana : I don't? Fuuka : Look, you don't have to feel awkward around me. <> Fuuka : I'm fine with it. Ooh, taiyaki! I'd love to eat some taiyaki, you want some? Sana : Sure! Eating taiyaki in the part, I feel much more relaxed than I have in a while. Fuuka : Isn't it cold? Sana : Do you think so? Fuuka : Really, Sana, please don't worry about me. You and him were practically going out, weren't you? Sana : Who told you that? Fuuka : I asked Tsuyoshi-kun about what you guys were like in elementary school, and… Sana : Tsuyoshi-kun? Fuuka : Well, I shouldn't have asked, but I was stupid like that, and he told me how you guys always supported each other and fought in a friendly way. <> Fuuka : And even though you weren't officially going out, that's practically how it was. Sana : It was? Fuuka : For me, on the other hand, I got the feeling that we were 'officially' going out, but nothing else. I didn't know you in elementary school, and I figured out right away that Hayama really liked you…but I never really thought that you liked him, and besides, I thought you were going out with Kamura-kun. <> Sana : Well, I might have never realized it if you hadn't started dating him. Fuuka : What do you mean? Sana : If I hadn't heard that you were going out, I might still not know how I felt about him. Fuuka : What? <> Fuuka : You really are stupid! Sana : Fuuka, wait! Fuuka…I'm sor— <> Fuuka : Don't apologize! Did you do anything wrong? Sana : No, I didn't. Fuuka : That's right. And neither did I. So I don't need to apologize either. Sana : Right. Fuuka : Anyway, you'd better go home. Tomorrow's math exam is going to be the worst. <> Sana : If I think about it, me and Fuuka never said, "Let's be friends." We just naturally got along really well. And I understand how hard Fuuka's trying not to have any hard feelings, so I will too. <> Sana : The end of exams! Thank goodness they're over! Fuuka : How did you do, Sana? Sana : All I know is that I did the best I could. Fuuka : We've got club activities starting tomorrow. Sana : Right! Let's work hard! Fuuka : Yeah! Sana : Suzuki-sensei! --How did you do? Sana : I did the best I could. Um, what happened with Komori-kun? I won't tell anyone but Hayama. --He's going to be put on probation. <> Sana : What does that mean? --Well, he can live a normal life at home, with people like probation officers checking in on him, and he's going to get counseling. Sana : That's lighter than I expected…because he's just a kid, I guess…but I wonder what Hayama will think. --And, although it's very quick, he's going to move to Fukushima. Sana : So I guess he'll be changing schools. --Right. Sana : I wonder if Hayama knows. --They thought it would be best if he could start fresh at a new school. I've already sent the records. Sana : When's he moving? --Today. <> Sana : Hayama? Hayama : How were the exams? Sana : I did the best I could! More importantly, have you heard about Komori-kun? Hayama : Yes, he's going to be put on probation. Sana : Not that…he's moving! Today! <> Hayama : We're out. I hope they won't be mad. Sana : Are you feeling OK, Hayama? Hayama : Yeah. Rei : Did you say the train was at 1:00? Sana : Yeah. Hayama, over here! <> Komori : Hayama-kun…I'm sorry about your hand… Hayama : Don't worry about it, it's nothing. <> Hayama : It might be cool to be a new type of one-handed karate artist. Check the karate magazines sometime in the future. Sana : Hayama's going to stick with karate, with just his left hand? Still, it's nice that he's looking towards the future. Hayama : Are you all right going with your mom? Komori : It's gotten so that we're able to talk a little bit… Hayama : I see. Komori : Hayama-kun… <> Komori : I've been feeling better since that time you came and talked to me. Thank you. And you came today, too…but we might never see each other again… Sana : Because, Hayama said that you were his friend, Komori-kun. Hayama : That's right. <> Hayama : So write down your contact information. Good luck. <> Sana : He looked happy. You really helped Komori-kun, Hayama. Hayama : Not really…and I'm the one who hurt him. Sana : But Hayama was hurt too…both his body and his heart…I guess that after you've hurt each other there might be no way to completely resolve it…and everyone has wounds left over, somewhere…but we just have to do the best we can. <> Sana : …And have FUN somehow! Don't be so gloomy! Hey, when will you be out of the hospital? We've gotta have a party! Hayama : I don't need something like that. Sana : I've already decided it! <> Sana : I can't remember, which way is the car? Hayama : Over there. Sana : OK, let's go! Hayama : Sana… Sana : What? Hayama : I talked with Fuuka. We broke up. Sana : Yeah, I heard. <> Hayama : Well, what are you going to do? Sana : What am I going to do? <> Sana : Now, unlike before, we really understand each other's feelings…I think…but…yeah, maybe it's best to say these things clearly. <> Sana : I don't know… Well, anyway, let's go back to the car, and then we can talk. Hayama : We can't talk there, with Mr. Sunglasses there. <> Sana : I've talked about a lot of things with Fuuka, and she said that the two of us were already practically going out. So…there's no reason for the two of us to get mushy, right after you broke up with Fuuka, right? <> Sana : It would be better if things were like they used to be…but it would also be OK if things were sometimes different from before, too. Oh, I'm embarrassed! I just can't say it right! <> Sana : But did you hear it? Hayama : Yeah, I got it. Sana : You really understand? Hayama : Yes. We'll hang out together pretty much just like we used to, but occasionally we can get mushy. Sana : That's not it! Hayama : It's what you said! Rei : Oh, there you are. You're late. Sana : Rei-kun… Rei : Did you see Komori-kun? Sana : Yeah. <> Rei : Hayama-kun, I called the hospital thinking they'd be worried, but they said you could be discharged the day after tomorrow. Sana : Really? Great! Rei : That's good, isn't it? Hayama : Yeah. What? Rei : There are so many things I want to say to him… <> Rei : After seeing how much Sana-chan has cried because of him… But I won't say anything. After all, he's suffered a lot himself. Ah…you've grown a lot, haven't you? Hayama : Maybe it's just you getting shorter because of your age. Rei : He really is rotten! Well, that's all right…but I won't let you make her cry again, Hayama! <> Sana : Two days later, Hayama was discharged, but he'll still go to the hospital for rehabilitation and things like that. Mr.Hayama : Anyway, congratulations on your return from the hospital. Hayama : Thanks. Sushi… Mr.Hayama : Akito, it's all right to eat sushi with your hands. That's how it was eaten originally. Hayama : You should've told me that sooner. Natsumi : Dad, he said something weird when he was in the hospital. He asked whether mom used to be a 'yan.' Isn't that rude? Mr.Hayama : It's not that I can't say it was true…but how did Akito know that? Natsumi : He said he had a dream about it. <> Mr.Hayama : A dream? Hayama : Yeah. Natsumi : Our mother was a very beautiful and elegant person. Hayama : Really? Natsumi : Well, I was really young, so I don't remember her very well… --Here, I made ya some apple juice. Natsumi : Huh? Something about the words she used… <> --Aw, you spit it up! Cant'cha drink my juice? Mr.Hayama : We're parents now, we gotta be a little careful about the way we talk. --Oh, that's right! Natsumi : Ah, my beautiful memories! Hayama : What did she remember? Mr.Hayama : The truth is that both your mother and I…kind of strayed from the straight and narrow. Natsumi : Even mom!? Mr.Hayama : Although both of us were model students before that… Mr.Hayama : We hurt others, and were hurt by others. Everyone has experiences like that, large and small. <> Mr.Hayama : But humans can transcend them if they have someone there to support them, whether that's a friend, or a lover, or a family member, or anyone. It's all right if it's just one person. Natsumi : Was mom that person for you? Mr.Hayama : Well…yes, maybe so. <> Hayama : I'm going to take a bath. Mr.Hayama : Do you need any help? Hayama : No. Mr.Hayama : But… Hayama : This is how things are going to be from now on, so you can't spoil me too much. Mr.Hayama : Should I at least help you wash your hair? Hayama : I'm fine! <> Sana : And writing a diary is hard too…Hayama can say that it isn't anything, but it really isn't nothing. I wonder how he's doing…if he's getting irritated… Hayama : That bath tired me out. <> Natsumi : Akito, phone for you. Hayama : I'll get it in my room. Sana : Hi, it's Sana! How do you like living at home again? Hayama : It's OK. I'm going to school tomorrow. Sana : Really? That's good. Oh, I passed my midterms! What are you going to do about your exams? Hayama : They're going to let me make them up. Sana : Yeah, you'll be fine taking them while you're in school. Hayama : Yeah… <> --What happened? --The two of you disappeared… --And then Komori-kun got transferred. --Did you get put in the hospital because he did something to you? Tsuyoshi : Would you like me to take notes for you, Akito-kun? Hayama : No, I can't get spoiled. I'll have you show me your notes if there's anything I missed. <> Tsuyoshi : Everyone works really hard in Sengoku-sensei's class. It's nice that it's so peaceful. --Well, group 2? Tsuyoshi : We're done! --That's quick. Well then, write your results on the blackboard. You do the table, Yasuda…you do the graph and your conclusions, Hayama. <> Tsuyoshi : But Hayama-kun is…I'll do it instead. Hayama : That's all right, Tsuyoshi. Tsuyoshi : But… Hayama : I have to be able to at least do this much. --The rest of you keep working! Tsuyoshi : Sensei must know about Akito-kun getting hurt…he might not give him any special treatment, but he only just got out of the hospital! Am I the only one who thinks this isn't fair? <> --That's too messy to read. Hayama : Straight lines for the graph… --Start preparing your report if you're finished the experiment, and compare your data to group 2. <> --Class dismissed. <> Tsuyoshi : Akito-kun, I just saw Sana-chan coming back from gym class. Sorry, but I told her about what just happened in science. Hayama : That's fine, but… Tsuyoshi : But then she started running furiously, probably towards Sengoku-sensei… Hayama : You should've told me that sooner! <> Sana : Hyakkoku-sensei! --That's "Sengoku." And close the door quietly. Sana : You are a treacherous devil! --What do you mean? Sana : Don't you remember? --Must be about Hayama… No. Sana : I do not think that you're suited to being a teacher! --I didn't become a teacher because I liked it. <> Sana : Then why did you? --There wasn't anything else for me to do. Sana : Don't you think you should quit? Nobody likes a teacher like that! --I have been thinking of quitting lately, if I can find a new job. I'm sick of dealing with nosy brats like you. <> Hayama : You picked a fight with him? Sana : I'm boiling with anger! Who does that guy think he is? I'm so mad, a million times more than the first time I met you! I gotta do something! Hayama : Let it go. <> Sana : Aren't you mad? He made you write that even though he knew about your injury…don't you think it's worse than physical violence to strike at someone's weak point like that? Hayama : I do think so. But I did the same thing. Sana : Yes, you…What? Hayama : I told him that his toupee was off. And now when students pass him in the hall they whisper about it…that must have hurt him too. Sana : Well, I do feel kind of sorry for him about that. But he was really mean! You, at least, have some regret about what you've done, but he has none at all! That kind of guy is just hopeless! <> Hayama : I could've become that kind of guy. Sana : Huh? I don't know about that. Hayama : If I'd never met you…or I might have become like Komori-kun. He might not have anybody like you. Hayama : I'm lucky. Sana : Lucky? Hayama : Yes, I'm lucky. Sana : Really? Hayama can still say he's lucky, even after all the hard times he's been through. He's changed so much since I first met him. <> Sana : That's progress! Hayama, let's have a party on the 24th! Let's! You remember the 'middle birthday' last year? Hayama : Yeah. Sana : And it's Fuuka's birthday! Hayama : I'm glad she brought it up first… Sana : And we have to celebrate your return from the hospital, too! Plus, it's Christmas Eve! <> Sana : So let's just put all the things we want to celebrate together and have a party! I'll go tell everybody! Hayama : Do what you like. Sana : Bye! Hayama : What about your job? Sana : I'm off until the 26th! Hayama : A party with everybody? No progress at all…
